About Expeditions

Hunting expeditions are a way to obtain rare and valuable materials (and food) by challenging monsters. These require no GM and function in a similar manner to Room of Forgotten Memories Encounters, only encountered at random. Hunting in a given area requires a Hunting Visa, the requirements for these vary from region to region. The following regions have been unlocked, along with their difficulty rating ranging from C to SSS.

Arcadia - 'Southern Meadows': C
Galerian - 'Windy Mountains': B
Destiny's Ascension - 'Biodome': S

Each hunting area is broken up into several zones. Generally the farther from the starting zone, the more dangerous the encounters but the more valuable the loot. Each area also has 'Epic' Encounters which are similar to bosses, Area Guardians, and may have weather conditions or other complications. Be warned, this isn't a simulation - death here is real, though spending a fate point will have you returned to safety.

Area Progression

Each area has a post under it's forum called 'Area Progression', which outlines how far one zone is from another, which will look something like this.

Into The Caves
Forest
Mountains [3]
Upper Caverns [5]
Lower Caverns [5]

Into The Valley
Forest
Valley Wall [2]
Deep Fjord [4A]

The number listed in brackets represents the number of encounters needed to reach a given area. When retracing your steps to leave however, you must only make one encounter per region (it is assumed you are more sure footed on the return). Note that an A next to the number suggests that an Area Guardian must be beaten before you can access this area. Each event must be rolled on the event table.

Event Table

The meat of the expedition. An event can either be monsters, obstacles or inclement challenges (weather, environment, etc) that must be overcome to proceed. Generally speaking, these fall into three categories.

When you start your hunting expedition, choose a leader for your group. For every 5 levels in Survival skill that character has, you gain 1 Shift Point. A Shift Point can be used to raise or lower an event roll by 1, and is restored the next day.

Challenge/Obstacle: A one time check that must be overcome. (Example: Traversing a narrow ledge) or bypassed in some way.
Environmental: Adjusts the environment (Example: High winds which render projectile attacks useless). This lasts until rolled again or until you switch areas.
Event: Affects the area in some way (Example: A landslide blocks your path. Leaving requires an extra 2 encounters). Some events will have you roll for multiple events.
Encounter: An encounter with a monster.

When rolling for encounter, a character may add or subtract 1/5th of their survival skill (rounded down) to/from the result (to hunt down a specific target or avoid a specific event).

Epic Encounters and Area Guardians

These two events are very similar. Epic Encounters are often the strongest in their area, sometimes their entire region. These can be monsters of legend waiting to pounce on unsuspecting hunters. Area guardians are generally less strong monsters who protect their territory with predatory avarice. These are not encounters one would wish to challenge solo. Area Guardians will only appear when trying to enter a guarded region, while Epic Encounters will only occur under certain conditions (a vampire may only appear at night for example).

Fleeing and Game Over

Bitten off a bit more than you can chew? It may be time to run. Each monster has a set 'flee' DC that must be passed with an athletics check twice in a row. In the event of multiple monsters, use the highest monsters DC and then add 1/2 of the other monsters. (Example, for monsters with DC's 20, 20, 20, 20, 25, the DC would be 25+(10+10+10+10) = 65). Fleeing takes up one turn., essentially opening you up to free attacks by the enemy.

Should monsters knock you out, it is game over. The monster that knocked you out has an 'Intention', often times rolled. If the monsters intention is to knock out, you will wake up in safety as a passerby has found your body. If the monsters intention is to kill, you are finished and must spend a fate point to survive.
