-= Background =-

History:
Note: This character is from the Crestomanci Multiverse. It is composed of 12 primary series of worlds with varying numbers of sub worlds coming off of them. Series 11 is the only series with only one world. Series 1 is generally considered to be the first series. The Chant family lives in the first world (World A) as Series 12. It is a world almost exactly like Earth except that instead of the industrial revolution the world decided to function on magic instead. World B is generally considered to be our (yours and my) Earth, but no one in the series ever goes there because magic does no function and no one wants to get stuck. It is a prominent family of witches, magicians, and enchanters. The main characters in two of the books in the quarter are from the Chant family, and a Chant appears in all of the books at some point.

Delano was born in the year 1848 in Wales. His mother was named Doris Chant and his father was named Alexander Chant. His mother was considered to be a powerful sorceress and his father was a dealer in rare spells and spell components of some renown (as well as a reputable witch in his own right.) Delano was educated by a private tutor in his early life. He showed no natural gift for sorcery, but had a natural aptitude for witchcraft, especially as it applied to the natural world.

He had two elder brothers, one of whom was a dashing enchanter, so Delano never felt any particular pressure not to let the family down. This meant he spent as much time playing outside in the orchards as he did attending his mother or father in their duties. Additionally, he had an older sister, a younger sister, and a younger brother anmed Crucible (an unfortunate name, to be sure.)

Delano's best friend was the gardener, Terry. Terry was also a wicked cricket player who played on the village team. Delano, to be perfectly honest, idolized Terry in the way that only a young boy could. Terry was a hedge magician and was Delano's first introduction to the art of Horticultural Magic.

Delano chose to study the art of Horticultural Witchcraft at Cambridge, and during his graduate studies because the favored pupil of Dr. Antonelli Petrocchi. Delano's doctoral thesis was on the use of magically enhanced incense to aid in the categorization of plant species by color while dream walking. It was accompanied by an original spell for the application of enchantments to the incense. It was well received.

While in university Delano was engaged in a long term relationship with one Gertrude Doyle. It ended badly and is a sore spot for Delano. He has only had written correspondence with her since the break up.

Delano went to work for his father at "Chant and Co. Rare Spells and Components" strait away. He used his witchcraft to acquire rare and special plant species from the Associated Worlds. They enjoyed a friendly working relationship and everything was going just swimmingly for their family until a rival component procuring and dealing company was taken over by a corrupt enchanter.

Delano lost his father, one of his sisters, and two of his brothers (including the eldest) in the mystery and troubles which were to follow. Crestomanci, a powerful enchanter with nine lives, eventually ended up saving them and defeating the evil enchanter.

In the following years Delano found that he did not have what it took to run the family business and it steadily, slowly, failed. His mother moved to Japan to escape the memories of her destroyed life, and he drifted apart from his remaining brother and sister.

Being 27, having nothing else to lose, enough money to live comfortably, a decent parcel of land, ample magic ability, and an infinite supply of scientific curiosity Delano decided to join the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge and become a Horticulturalist of the Unknown.

Using Royal Society Spells and Equipment he spent the next three years of his life almost entirely on underexplored worlds within the associated worlds. He collected a new species of sea weed with a mermaid guide, found the Spitting Spiria Seed on the outskirts of Speilberg and freed the land from the curse of Baba Yaga, and evaded the Arm of Asheth for a glimpse at the divine 100-year-lotus.

A True English Gentleman of Proper Descent, Traveling and Exploring the Multiverse in the Service of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Delano Chant, Horticulturalist of the Unknown, thrown into the unknown whilst on an adventure.

Notable Accomplishments: See above.
Training (If any): See above. PhD in Horticultural Magic from Cambridge.
