Swords

From the traditional straight blade to the curve of the katana, from the utility of the shortsword paired with the accompaniment of the buckler to the massive blade of the nodachi and bastard sword, the sword has been a staple of a warrior's arsenal for a time. They are the standard-bearer, and come in all shapes and sizes, even if the practicality of such seems odd at times. There are generally four types (all decimals round down):

Short Swords
Cost -25%, Damage Modifier -25%, To-hit bonus +25%, DC -10

Short swords were originally developed as a sidearm weapon to be used in lieu of larger weapons when distances are closed between targets. A soldier or a hunter would use a javelin or a bow and arrow at a distance, then once that weapon became inefficient to use, would draw their short sword and engage in mortal combat with the enemy. The most famous short swords were those used in duels to the death between nobles, lords, or even commoners. These were graceful weapons, and among the chief discipline of short sword styles is that of fencing, wielding the rapier or the saber.

Short swords are graceful and light to wield, allowing a user to wield them with a single hand when trained well enough, allowing the second hand to be either free or occupied by another weapon, or even a shield. Weapons such as rapiers, gladiuses, wakizashis, cavalry sabers, and scimitars are included in this group. Short swords occupy 3 inventory slots when carried.

Perks: Good all around weapon. Can block incoming attacks. More hits than Long Sword. Cost effective.
Standard Swords
As listed

Slightly larger blades than the shortsword, they can still be wielded with one hand and deliver more powerful strikes than their thin-bladed bretheren. Their weight makes them a touch more unwieldy, though more effective when they strike. A standard sword occupies 5 inventory slots when carried.
Long Swords
Cost +25%, Damage Modifier +25%, To-hit bonus -25%, DC +10

The long sword was developed to give reach to soldiers who otherwise had none. After years and years of dominance by the short sword such as the Gladius and the wakizashi, it was determined that by forging longer blades, the soldier would have a better reach against enemies -- both sentient and wild -- and thus an advantage in combat. These developments lead to such weapons as the glaive, the greatsword, the broadsword, the bastard sword, the samurai-style katana, the nodachi, and other similar weapons. Throughout the ages, these styles have been added on and expanded upon each other, resulting in hybrids and crosses of these styles of weapons to be considered classes of their own.

Long swords in the RPG come in a variety of shapes and styles, and as such they are the broadest applied weapon class available. We don't make exact stipulations to qualify a sword as a 'long sword,' but rather make it a relative issue -- if the weapon is designed to be wielded by two hands (even if the character does not use it as such), the weapon is considered a long sword. For example, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII's Masamune is considered a long sword, as is Nero from Devil May Cry 4's Red Queen, along with great cleavers and samurai swords, as these are weapons designed for power rather than grace. Long swords occupy 8 inventory slots when carried.

Perks: Excellent offensive weapons. More powerful hits. A heavy weapon that can still attack/use customs.
Greatswords
Cost +50%, Damage Modifier +50%, To-hit bonus -50%, DC +20

Practicality, schmacticality. The bigger, the better, or such was the philosophy of the man who had first crafted such a blade, seeking to forsake speed for raw size and power. The greatsword, fashioned into forms such as the nodachi and bastard sword, bears incredible reach, and proves unwieldy except for the hardiest of warriors, in its awkward balance. Generally they're the size of the wielder.

Greatswords occupy 12 inventory slots when carried.
