Artisan: Performance

A performance artist creates works of art that can either be experienced or purchased; they come in a variety of backgrounds and types, and produce a wide array of goods and services for consumption. Whether it is a stage play, a concert, writing music for others to perform, painting, or pantomime, a performer has the ability to captivate an audience -- regardless of size -- and entertain, amuse, inform, or excite it.

Since this is such a broad skill and varied in its uses, the Advanced Skills for a performance artist will be similarly broad and should be assumed to be utilized by anyone who has the skill. Actors, poets, criers, muscians, illustrators, and orators of all kinds should feel free to use this and come up with a means of which to pass it in character.

As an Artisan skill, this functions as both a Crafting and a Knowledge skill, top of its utility in game, which will be further elaborated in its Advanced Skills. For more information on crafting Sale Items, click here.

Empathetic Show
Cost: 30 SkP
Level Required: 3
Untrained: No
Type: Action
Effect: The performer can use their performance to tap into the emotions of others, potentially gaining insight into their motivations or vulnerabilities.

Captivating Performance
Cost: 30 SkP
Level Required: 3
Untrained: Yes, the Concentration check is replaced with a Luck check with an increasing DC.
Type: Action
Effect: A performer has the ability to enrapture an audience, willing or otherwise, with their work. This character makes an Artisan: Performance check versus a target audience to pull their complete attention to the user. Audience can make a Concentration check to stay focused on what they were doing; a failure means the target will remain distracted for (skill level) rounds or actions. A performer can make consecutive checks to keep a target enthralled.

Empassioned Show
Cost: 60 SkP
Level Required: 4
Untrained: No.
Type: Action
Effect: Some performances not only captivate, but stir up audiences in a positive or a negative way; it can be an uplifting depiction that warms hearts or an insidious one that incites violence. The user makes an Artisan: Performance check against an audience to change its perception of a target. Consider perceptions to be “Hostile,” “Unfriendly, “Neutral,” “Friendly,” “Fanatic.” A single Empassioned Show check can change perceptions one "step" in each direction; a critical success can move the perception two steps, whereas a critical failure can backfire on the performer.

Dangerous Performance
Cost: 90 SkP
Level Required: 5
Untrained: No.
Type: Action
Effect: This performer takes their art to the extreme, utilizing special or unorthodox techniques or circumstances in which to perform (for instance, consider Evel Knievel) that make it fascinating for larger audiences to tune in. A "Dangerous Performance" will garner multimedia attention, but requires time to prepare; word will rapidly spread, artistic depictions or cell phone video will depict it, and an artist's notoriety is enhanced for this performance. Only functions on "Sale Item" projects.
When a project is declared a "Dangerous Performance," it adds a +5 to the project's base Auction Modifier, each superbotch, botch, crit, and divine have their modifiers doubled, and its payout is doubled.
Each superbotch requires the character to make a Performance + Health skill check to avoid grievous injury that can, in addition to its normal effects, delay progress; this DC is equal to the Difficulty 1 DC of the skill level the character is attempting (a Level 4 "Dangerous Performance" has a DC of 75, for instance), which cannot be modified by Luck Points.

Symbolic Performance
Cost: 120 SkP
Level Required: 6
Untrained: No.
Type: Bonus
Effect: The performer can use symbolism or metaphor in their performance, potentially communicating complex ideas or concepts to others. By utilizing specific icons or symbols, the character can allude to particular groups or events that may convey an underlying or subversive message. Depending on the iconography used, this can enhance a Sale Item, an Empassioned Performance, a Dangerous Performance, a Hypnotizing Performance, or an Empathetic Performance, based on GM direction at the time of the Performance.

Hypnotizing Performance
Cost: 120 SkP
Level Required: 6
Untrained: No.
Type: Action
Effect: The performer can use their performance to hypnotize others, potentially gaining control over their actions or gaining valuable information. When this Performance is used against a target's/group of targets' mental defense checks, it can convince them to follow the performer's directions within a reasonable boundary, under control of the GM. A hypnotized subject is also considered "broken down" when it is the subject of Gather Information or Speechcraft checks. Violence will typically break a subject's hypnotism.
