Tournaments

The ultimate test of a warrior's skill -- in a sporting- and safe-like manner, of course. Putting metal against metal in a contest for notoriety and -- more importantly -- gil.

Tournaments are constantly growing and evolving things-- however, the upper echelons will generally remain the same. After all, it's a big deal to upset the champ, and a Fight of the Century only comes along once every... well, century. Week in and week out, new contestants are cycled in and out, so it's statistically improbable to get the same challengers time and time again. Each tournament has its own different regions, so while one region will be having its Quintus Cup, another region will be hosting it the next week, and parallel brackets exist just to compensate for the sheer number of applicants.

In short, there's no shortage of competition, and there's no reason to not try if you have the urge.

Rules:
  • Tournaments are week-long affairs. You can only compete it one tournament a week, and no other gil-generation avenue or research projects may be attempted in this time (Artisan work, Covert Ops, etc.).
  • Any combat skill can be used, magical, psionic, or otherwise, but ONLY one may be used.
The roll for Touraments is: 1s(skill level) + (Strength Bonus + Class Feats + Improved Momentum Milestones). No luck points can be used throughout this process. A Divine Relationship can only be used once for the week.
  • Tournaments are in a "double elimination" format; if you lose twice, you're disqualified from the tournament.
  • Tournaments only last a week apiece. If a competitor hasn't completed the tournament within 7 days of starting, the tournament is considered complete and the competitor only receives the winnings from the last bracket he/she won.
  • To participate:
    • Choose a tournament.
    • Roll to qualify. If you fail the DC, you do not receive the qualifying bonus.
    • Once per day, you may roll to continue on in the tournament, one Bracket at a time. When you beat a Bracket's DC, you proceed on to the next Bracket the next day.
    • When you fail a DC, you have lost a match. When one match is lost, you can try that bracket again to claw your way out. When a second match is lost, the competitor is eliminated from the tournament altogether, and only claims the prizes for the bracket the competitor last won.
    • If you beat the Champion DC for a tournament, you claim the highest prize and receive accolades. Congratulations!

Sponsorships
Each and every tournament match has talent scouts searching for the best, most talented, most personable, and most sell-able fighters in the market. Whether it's for clothes, perfume, weapons, armor, food, electronics, they want someone's name on it and someone to show up in the ads. Even if it's something short like "I'm <INSERT NAME HERE>, and this is my favorite shop on Lumina Station."

In order to get a talent scout's attention, you have to do excessively well in your tournament. Then, to keep his attention, you have to KEEP doing excessively well, and make a showman of yourself when you win the Cup. Only tournament winners will be considered -- no losers allowed.

When you're competing in a tournament, keep an eye out for Criticals and Divines. When you've won the Cup Championship for a tournament, roll a 1d100. For every Critical you scored during the tournament, you receive a +5 bonus; for every Divine, you gain a +10 bonus. For instance, if you roll one of each, you get a 1d100+15.

The target number is 100. If your result passes 100, you qualify for a one-time sponsorship/advertisement from a galactic corporation or business... and a one-time payment from them in addition to your tournament winnings.

If you pass 100, roll 1d7+3. The following results net you the following rewards:
  • 4 - Ares Macrotechnology, Lanzard III
  • 5 - DataDyne Industries, Earth
  • 6 - Shinra Electric Power Company, Lanzard III.
  • 7 - Xanatos Enterprises, Earth
  • 8 - Arcadian Royal Marine Recruitment Office, Lanzard III
  • 9 - The Interstellar Alliance, "Babylon 5" Orbital Platform
  • 10 - The Galactic Merchants Union, "Jewel of the Heavens" Deep Space Station
The roll result also determines the amount of payout from your sponsor. Ares Macrotech will pay out four times the tournament's total amount, while getting a sponsorship from the Galactic Merchants' Union will net you ten times your tournament's maximum payout.

Your sponsorship lasts for a brief time, but naturally a copy of the finished ad or commercial is sent to the contestant as a keepsake. It'll sit nicely next to your tournament trophies.
