Crossbows

Crossbows are the meaner bigger brother of the bow and arrow. The weapon operates off of the same basic principle: force is applied to a projectile by pulling on a string and releasing it. However, the crossbow made a huge step forward in projectile weaponry by taking the string-pulling out of the hands of the operator, instead operating by mechanical or more advanced forms of force. By doing this, the operator is able to put exponential amounts of force behind a projectile with minimal work (in most cases). This also made the requirement for projectiles to be more stringest, and the crossbow bolt was invented to bridge the gap between longbow arrow and barricade-breaching projectiles. The extreme force behind crossbows make them excellent for breaching armor, and due to the momentum of the larger projectile, even makes modern body armor look like a wet towel.

The advent of the automatic crossbow system was a direct result of the research behind firearm cartridges and magazines. Bolts are loaded into a large cyndrilical 'hopper' so to speak, and by operating in the a mix of the twisting fashion of a revolver cylinder and the belt-fed machine gun, a tightly coiled belt of bolts will spin inside of the chamber to be fired by the crossbow, which automatically pulls its band back by a draw mechanism. However, this rapidfire comes at cost of range and velocity.

Crossbows are considered 5-slot weapons, and while not as silenced as regular bows due to the draw mechanism, the weapon requires a Listen Check (DC20) to detect. In addition, crossbows are granted an automatic Armor Piercing capability, lowering the damage soak granted by armor by 5% per attack (not per hit), not to exceed 20% reduction.
