<<> Character Information <>>

-= Basics =-

Name: Dr. Folius, or simply Folius.
Race: Eydouxii
Height: Approximately 9'6'' when standing at his full height. His tail is roughly the same length as his height.
Weight: In the range of 700 to 800 lbs.
Appearance: Image (used with permission; was giftart from a friend. I will be uploading one drawn by me which shows him full-body fairly soon).
Eye Color: Yellow; eight of them (one dominant pair and three smaller pairs).
Hair Color: The seven thick tentacles on his head I suppose count as 'hair' -- they are grey-ish green like the rest of him unless he is displaying or trying to intimidate, in which case they raise up and redden (it would also be prudent to note that his olfactory sensors are on the ends of them).
Notable Features: Four arms; each hand has a thumb and three fingers, all with approximately five-inch long claws. Very sharp teeth and a 'carrion beak' at the end of his mouth that allows for tearing into flesh easily. Strong legs and feet. Simply, an overgrown lizard with too many arms and eyes.

-= Personality =-

Favorite Food: As a carnivore, Folius obviously enjoys most forms of raw meat. Fish-like creatures are especially rare on his planet of origin, and so he will never pass up an opportunity for raw fish. Ironically, he has yet to be introduced to sushi and sashimi.
Likes:
*Being a doctor, Folius enjoys above all the feeling of saving or giving life. This ties in with his religion. His species worship a mother goddess. The religion stresses purity of community and self; bathing is a daily ritual, to cleanse the body and mind (naturally, he cannot logically bathe every day in his current vocation, but even a simple washing of the hands or face will do in a pinch). There are several taboos, such as not killing one of your own species, not overkilling during hunting and upsetting the life balance, and never, ever, harming a nesting or pregnant mother or her babies. Such crimes are punishable by death -- by drowning. This is to purify the rest of the species, who are brought down by their kin's impurity, as well as to purify the dead through water. This is the only excusable reason to kill within the species.
*He has made something of a pet project out of the study of humanoid sexuality and sexual practices, as they are so foreign to his kind, and delights in an opportunity to add to his research on the subject.
*He enjoys mild pain. When his kind are born, their sense of touch is very high, and their scales are very soft. This encourages the hatchlings to stay together in the nest - touching is pleasurable and calming, and after enough there is a 'plateau' stage, wherein a level of complete calm and contentment is reached. That is the closest to physical pleasure their kind can experience. However, after the first few months of babyhood, it is all but gone. Their sense of touch dulls and their scales harden; their pain and pleasure thresholds go up quite a lot. To put it simply, most of what humans would consider painful is pleasurable to him. He often 'acidentally' cuts himself while washing his surgical implements, for instance (his kind often never discover this, as they have no natural enemies and it is taboo to hurt each other).
Dislikes:
*Those who kill simply for fun or sport disgust him. Though he himself will kill, he will only do so when it is absolutely necessary and will pray afterwards to justify his actions to his goddess. He sees those who do not do so, and who in fact kill simply for the sake of killing, as the most impure of individuals and will generally refuse to associate with them.
*Extremely bright lights; having eight very sensitive eyes, too much bright light can even extend into a painful range for him, to the point where he closes all but one set.
*Wide, flat open spaces. As a native to a jungle planet, where you couldn't go five feet without hitting a tree, he is put very out of sorts by too much open space.
Favorite Color: Folius is partial to deep, blood red (see his coat in the above picture). Not only does it stand out, but it is a direct relation to both his participation in the medical field and his carnivorous heritage.
Fears:
*Impurity of self worries him quite a bit; as mentioned above, he prays daily to avoid this.
*Psionics and being directly spoken to inside of his mind scare him to no end; in his religion, one's mind is one of the purest parts of oneself, and should be treated with the utmost reverence. To have someone blundering into it and even sifting through it, therefore, is a horrible violation in his eyes and is one of the only things that can truly reduce him to a nervous wreck.
*Uselessness in a medical context. He sees it as a disservice to his Goddess if he fails in his task of saving life, and will generally be melancholy for a while after.

-= Background =-

History:
Folius was taken from his home planet when he was the age equivalent on earth of about sixteen or so (three Eydouxii years, which is equivalent to about 10.5 earth years). He was part of a humanoid experiment to attempt to 'civilize' his species. Thus, he was already and still strongly is in connection with his culture, especially his religion. It was originally a constant source of worry for him, once off the planet, that he could not bathe daily, though once he entered into the medical field after his 'civilization' and he found much easier and more thorough methods of sterilization, this became a moot point. Because of the precise nature of his species in their hunting style, medicine and science seemed perfectly suited for him. He was intrigued at the idea that there were people who wished to be cut open and have things moved around, and once he realized that it was, in a way, a job that dealt directly with giving and preserving life, he poured himself into it with a passion as he saw it as doing the Goddess's work (he is extremely proud of this, believing he has been chosen to be a direct emissary of the Goddess).
He quickly rose to the top ring of students in his class and graduated with honors... but couldn't get a job (any places of employ he applied to ended up turning him down on the grounds that his appearance would 'frighten the patients', though this always felt a rather weak argument to him; he believed they felt he was too much of an 'uncivilized' species and that, in the presence of blood and open wounds, he would 'revert'; his only medical training had been on those already deceased. He is very quick to argue against the supposed 'feral' nature of his species). Eventually he found his way to the Nexus port planet, where he set up a small shop in the Red District, taking whoever came to his door for prices even a common gutter whore could afford.
He became a pirate after treating Captain Morgan for a minor wound he'd received. Morgan, rather taken with both his talent and his personality, took Folius on as surgeon and eventually quartermaster of the SS Orpheus, promising him an abundance of opportunities for life-saving, as pirates generally tended to get injured in their work environment. There, he had many dangerous and delightful adventures, as you do.
Lately, the SS Orpheus and her crew have been mellowing out, going for longer and longer stretches of shore leave. Folius is using this as an opportunity to seek out new adventures and opportunities to use his skills.

Notable Accomplishments:
*Graduation (with honors) from an elite medical academy.
*Earning the rank of quartermaster (second only to the captain) aboard the SS Orpheus.
Training (If any):
*General medicine with an emphasis on critical care.
*Pirate-style combat (ambush, close-quarters fighting, how to take on a large group of peple).
*Minor skills in research and book-keeping (another duty of a quartermaster).

<<> Special Notes <>>

There is nothing much else to add here except that Folius's species, generally, does not have the same concepts of relationships as humanoids do. They are a generally solitary species, only really gathering enmasse for mating or the punishment of a member of the species who has gone against the Goddess. That isn't to say they are not a community -- merely one that doesn't feel the need to be in a group at every waking moment, and does not differentiate the rest of the species as 'friends' or 'enemies' or 'lovers'. Folius was lucky in that he has been around humanoids for a decent amount of time, and his interest in their sexuality has caused him to conduct a decent amount of research into how their relationships work. However, Folius will still take longer to make allies and friends, as for him it is a conscious process. For example, 'I do not abhor being around this person. They have done nothing I find particularly objectionable, nor have they ever attempted to hurt me. I find our interactions to be mostly positive in nature, and when they are around I enjoy their company and perhaps even seek them out. Therefore, we must be 'friends''.

Dear Doctor,
Thanks for making sure I didn't snuff it. Keep the bullet. It's a souvenir.
